FAQ
1.Q: Why are you considered to be the busiest agency?
A: Many people call us the busiest agency in Alberta for booking Background Talent. We book talent from Background roles to lead and supporting roles in areas of Film, TV & Commercials. We are networked well within the industry and we are not excluded by any casting directors. We also utilize our on-line database which allows us to submit and book our talent very quickly and efficiently. This means we can get more people on set. We used to use the agency binder system but this limited the quantity of performers we could place on set.
2.Q: What kind of productions is SilverScreen involved with?
A: We like to participate in everything to do with Film, TV & Commercials. This can include Corporate Training Videos, Corporate Ads for Broadcast, Infomercials, Country Music Videos, Rock Music Videos, Movies of the Week, Made for TV Movies, TV Mini-Series, International, National, Local & Regional Commercials, Feature Films, Short Films, Independent Films, etc. From time to time we may also participate with Modeling, Print Work, Fashion Shows, Live Performances, etc.
3.Q: Do you take everyone who wants to join?
A: Regarding Background Performers (extras)we do limit the number of talent we accept. However, we are much more 'open' to all kinds of different looks, personality types, ethnicities, etc. We look for people with good attitudes; dedication, reliability and a strong drive to succeed. We will not take people who we feel will not represent us in an appropriate and professional manner. Regarding Principle & Union talent the prospective talent must meet a different level of criteria.
4.Q: What is the frequency of work if I am with your agency?
A: Many factors must be taken into consideration such as how busy of a year Alberta is having with the film industry, the breakdowns for each production, your own availability, your willingness in staying touch with us and giving us your availability, etc Having said that in 2004 we booked over 2500 positions in Film, TV & Commercials. Generally, we have said that if you are staying in touch with us regularly it's very possible for us to place you on set.
Regarding Principle work our job is to get you auditions and casting opportunities. Being cast in the production is up to you. Many of our members get lots of bookings. Please remember, our company works hard to provide you with all the possibilities for film and TV work. Choosing us helps narrow down the process of making it in this industry. Bottom line is many of our members are getting work. We have an open door policy once you are with us. This means we want to get to know you and it is your responsibility to get to know us. The more you are on our minds the easier it is for us to get you work.
5.Q: Does being a background performer mean I will become an actor?
A: Generally, no. You need to build your resume with quality credits from Film, TV, Commercial & Theatre productions as well as Training credits. Casting directors want to see significant roles on your resume and preferably a demo reel. Usually, the best way to build your career with these credits is for us to get you involved with the independent filmmakers. They will usually offer you a copy of the production, meals and credit. This will help develop your career and lead towards becoming a professional actor. You want to build your resume with film, TV, commercial and theatre credits. Training by recognized acting schools and techniques is also very important.
6.Q: What is a demo reel?
A: A demo reel is a demo of your best work. Once you've done a number of productions you take your copies and have your best scenes and/or work spliced into your demo reel.. Then you can show Agents and Casting Directors your acting ability.
7.Q: How can I identify a legitimate agency?
A: Legitimate agencies make their money by getting you work based on a booking commission structure. These agencies should also be networked to receive 'Breakdown Services'. Up front fees should only be nominal and you should understand what you are paying for. Use your intuition when making a decision. Be wary of offers of expensive portfolio packages and/or classes and workshops that can cost hundreds and even thousands of dollars. They may tell you things like you have a perfect look, exactly what we've been looking for, or guarantee you work. We're not saying pictures or classes, etc. should be avoided, but we feel agencies should not be charging for these services. Your agency should also be used by all casting directors in their area otherwise you could miss the opportunity to work on the biggest productions that come.
8.Q: Do I need to get a headshot or a portfolio done to be an extra?
A: Absolutely not. A professional looking snap shot is all you need just for our files and our Internet database. If you want to be more than an extra and start auditioning for more significant roles then you may want to get a headshot done. We can recommend some photographers but we do NOT insist that you use them.
